Letchworth State Park
Letchworth State Park, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern United States. The park is 17 miles long and encompasses over 14, 350 acres and contains over 20 waterfalls. The Genesee River runs through the middle of the park and over three magnificent waterfalls… Upper Falls (70ft), Middle Falls ( 107 ft )or Lower Falls ( 70ft ). The Upper Falls is straddled by a 235 foot railroad trestle. The cliffs, created by the river are 600 feet high.
Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. There are numerous walking trails along the gorge which are well maintained and accessible. Trails are also available for horseback riding and biking. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and white water rafting are a few of the popular park activities. Outdoor swimming pools are located in the North and South picnic areas. In the Autumn, the fall foliage is spectacular. Take a hot air balloon ride over Letchworth to enjoy unique and spectacular views of the waterfalls, the gorge, and the changing colors of the leaves. Winter activities include include snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ice skating, snow tubing and horse drawn sleigh rides.
Overnight lodging is available at several rustic cabin areas. You can rent one of its 82 cabins or perhaps stay at one of its a 270 site campground, or stay at the Glen Iris Inn. Be sure to visit the Letchworth Park Museum featuring a large collection of Native American artifacts.
